Making fish buns at home is a fun and delicious way to enjoy this savory snack. Here's a simple recipe for making fish buns:

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast

  • 2 tablespoons butter (room temperature)

  • ¾ cup warm milk

For the fish filling:

  • 200g of canned tuna or any cooked fish (like mackerel or salmon)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 small potato, boiled and mashed

  • 1 small carrot, grated

  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste

  • 1 teaspoon curry powder or garam masala

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tablespoon oil

  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (optional)

  • 1 boiled egg, chopped (optional)

For egg wash:

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions:

1. Prepare the dough:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.

  2. Add the butter and warm milk to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough starts to come together.

  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.

  4. Put the dough in a greased bowl. Cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

2. Prepare the fish filling:

  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.

  2. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.

  3. Add the ginger-garlic paste and cook for a minute.

  4. Add the grated carrot and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.

  5. Add the mashed potato and fish, breaking the fish into small pieces.

  6. Stir in the curry powder, salt, green chilies, and coriander leaves. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.

  7. Remove from heat and let the filling cool. Add the chopped boiled egg if using.

3. Assemble the buns:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to remove the air.

  3. Divide the dough into equal portions (about 8-10 pieces).

  4. Roll each part into a ball, then flatten it into a circle on a floured surface.

  5. Place a spoonful of the fish filling in the center of each circle.

  6. Bring the edges together and pinch to seal, forming a bun.

  7. Place the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, seam side down.

  8. Cover the buns with a damp cloth and let them rise for another 15-20 minutes.

4. Bake the buns:

  1. Brush the tops of the buns with the egg wash (beaten egg mixed with milk).

  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown.

  3. Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
